A nano-ceramic coating is a protective layer applied to the body on top of the clear coat. It fills the pores of the paint and forms a thin, hard film on the surface. After that the car washes more easily, stays clean longer and copes better with road chemicals.
What the coating gives you
✔ deep, almost mirror-like gloss
✔ water and dirt bead and roll off instead of spreading across the body
✔ resistance to UV — the paint fades more slowly
✔ protection from road salt and cleaning chemicals
✔ fine wash-induced scratches appear less often
What ceramic does not do: it will not save you from a stone strike. It is a thin layer, not armour. If the job is protecting the body on the motorway, you need paint protection film, and the two are often done together: film on the exposed areas, ceramic over the top.
Why it is not something to rush
Ceramic follows whatever is underneath it. Every scratch and every hazy patch in the clear coat stays under the coating and becomes more visible — the layer draws attention to them. That is why most of the work is not the application but the preparation:
1. washing and decontaminating the body — tar, insect residue, ingrained dirt
2. degreasing with products that are safe for the clear coat
3. polishing the body, headlamps and glass — swirl marks and circular traces are removed
4. dealing with chips
5. a finishing polish to an even gloss
6. applying the coating in layers
7. curing
This is also why ceramic costs noticeably more than the description suggests: you are paying for the preparation, not for the product itself.
How long it lasts
It depends on the product, the number of layers, mileage, where the car is kept and how it is washed. There is no single universal figure — a correct number exists only for a specific package and only if the care instructions are followed.
Caring for the car afterwards
Do not wash the car for the first week — the coating is still hardening. After that, regular rinsing is enough: dirt holds onto the body far less than it used to. Avoid stiff brushes and dirty cloths — they are exactly what leaves the circular marks that send a car back for polishing.
